Starting in Fall 2005, each student entering Illinois State University is required to bring a computer to campus. This applies to entering freshmen, transfer, and graduate students. The reasons behind the policy are many, but just like textbooks, attendance in class, and appropriate study time, a computer has been deemed to be critical to a student's success. Those who do not have 24x7 access to the Internet and a computer are at a disadvantage.
TechZone will help all students through the process of bringing a computer to campus. If a new computer is desired, they will help students and parents make a good purchasing decision and get a good price.
Additional sites and information regarding the policy are as follows:
Student Computer Ownership Policy - The text found on the University Policy website (approved October 2003).
Campus Computer Requirements - Information and other considerations on the Computer Ownership Policy.
Will students be penalized if they do not own a computer?
The policy clearly states that "No student will be denied admission to the University based on an inability to purchase a computer." The University's President has referred to owning a computer like owning a textbook. It is clear that the student will be at a disadvantage without the resource, but will not be forced out of a class or the University.
Will the cost of computers be included in the scholarships for students who are on full scholarships?
The cost of a computer can be added to a student's total cost of attendance. The cost of attendance is one of the factors that determine the amount of financial aid offered.
Are ResNet connections available in all the residence halls?
Yes.
If I am buying a new computer, do I have to use a certain vendor?
No. TechZone is a University Department which has negotiated pricing with numerous partner vendors. TechZone is available to assist you with purchasing and getting the best price possible, but you are encouraged to do your own homework and purchase from a vendor you trust.
When does the policy take effect?
Beginning in August 2005, all new students entering Illinois State University are expected to bring a computer.
I've heard I must bring a laptop.
The policy explicitly states that students must bring a computer - either desktop or laptop is acceptable. However, many students find that a laptop is more desired for wireless networking, small group study work, trips off-campus, and saving space in the residence halls and apartments.
Who will provide necessary technical support?
The University Computer Help Desk, ResNet Residential Computer Consultants (RCCs), and the Walk-Up Technology Service Center provide technical support. TechZone recommends that new machines be purchased with a sufficiently long warranty for vendor support of the hardware. There are a variety of such support contracts available through individual vendors.
I'm a current student. Will I need to have a computer?
If you began coursework before August 2005, the answer is no. The policy applies only to those students entering Illinois State. The process of all students having computers will take several years. However, current students know better than anyone the work that is required on a computer in their major and most already have or plan to purchase a computer very soon.
